Connective Tissue Grafting for Dental Implants in Memorial

July 12, 2018

smiling older coupleOf all the options available for tooth replacement, dental implants have become the gold standard. They are most similar to the natural construction of a tooth, they keep you jawbone strong and healthy, and they do not impinge on adjacent teeth. However, if the width of the bone is not sufficient, then dental implants in Memorial may result in recession and dehiscence (opening) of tissue around the implants. Consequently, gingival recession could ensue. To correct this, a dentist may recommend connective tissue grafting for implant esthetics.

What is Connective Tissue Grafting?

Connective tissue grafting is also called gum grafting or soft tissue grafting. During this procedure, a small piece of tissue is removed from another part of your mouth, usually the palate or the roof of your mouth. This tissue is stitched over your affected gums around a dental implant.

Why would a connective tissue grafting in Memorial be necessary if you have dental implants? Insufficient bone volume or worsening gum health and recession can cause implant threads to be exposed through your gums. If this happens, then soft tissue grafting will add more gum tissue around your implants. Then, implant threads will not show and your gums will once again provide the support your implants need to remain in place.

Oral Hygiene with Dental Implants

If you have dental implants, then taking good care of your teeth and gums is essential. Dental implants are susceptible to a bacterial infection called peri-implantitis, which can weaken the bond between your implants and gum and bone tissue that hold them firmly in place. If peri-implantitis gets bad enough, your dentist may need to remove the implants.

To avoid peri-implantitis and other oral health problems, clean your dental implants as well as you do your natural teeth. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth. Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste twice a day every day. Floss around your implants to remove plaque and particles of food. Plaque can cling to the restoration that is mounted on top of an implant just as it does your natural teeth.

If you’re noticing the threads on your dental implants are starting to show through the surrounding gum tissue, then contact you dentist to schedule an appointment.
