7 Tips to Ease Invisalign Discomfort

Invisalign has helped millions of patients across the world achieve the bright, beautiful smiles they’ve always wanted since it first debuted in 1997. This treatment works by applying light but constant pressure on the teeth to move them into the right position over time. Patients are given a series of clear aligners that get progressively straighter and need to be switched out every one or two weeks. As with any orthodontic treatment, some mild discomfort is to be expected. If you’re experiencing Invisalign discomfort, read on to learn seven tips that will help you get it under control.

Tip #1: Use Orthodontic Wax

If you have Invisalign attachments that are causing irritation to your gums or teeth, consider using orthodontic wax to cover them up. This will prevent your attachments from scratching or otherwise damaging your lips, gums, and cheeks while you eat.

Tip #2: Take Medicine

When you first begin to wear your aligners or when you switch to a new set, you may notice some mild discomfort. Pain medicine can help make the transition easier. Additionally, consider taking a nighttime sleep aid to help you make it through the night.

Tip #3: Ice It Down

Putting an ice pack or a cold compress on your face can help lessen any inflammation or discomfort you’re feeling. Additionally, eating popsicles, ice cream, or other cold foods or drinks can have a similar effect.

Tip #4: Gargle Saltwater

Add half a teaspoon of table salt to eight ounces of warm water and swish with the mixture. This will help cleanse and calm swollen gums by soothing the irritated tissue. Repeat the process until you’ve used up all of the water.

Tip #5: Switch to New Aligners Before Bed

The first few hours after you put on a new set of aligners are usually the most uncomfortable. Consider switching to your new ones before you go to bed so you can sleep through the initial discomfort.

Tip #6: Avoid Crunchy or Hard Foods

Foods like chips and pretzels can poke your gums and cause additional soreness and irritation if you eat them after you put on a new set of aligners. Instead, eat mashed potatoes, apple sauce, and other soft foods for the next few meals.

Tip #7: Use Invisalign Chewies

These are soft, sponge-like chewing devices that help your aligners fit more snugly by getting rid of airspaces. They also help your teeth shift to fit your new aligner trays faster.

Along with these seven tips, make sure to speak with your dentist if your Invisalign discomfort is extreme or lasts for a long time. They will be able to get to the bottom of the issue and administer the care you need to make your way toward a gorgeous, pain-free smile!
