When needing to replace several teeth or an entire arch, dentures remain one of the most popular and reliable options out there. Not only are they the more cost-effective treatment, but they also provide a much more natural-looking and comfortable solution than past restorations. While you can expect them to last 10 years or more with proper care, you may want to know the best practices for maximizing their lifetime. Keep reading to learn four tips on caring for your dentures!

#1: Brush Your Dentures Frequently

Although they aren’t your natural teeth, you’ll want to clean your new restorations just like you would your permanent pearly whites. This will keep them free of food particles, plaque buildup, and harmful bacteria. Be sure to use non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your dentures, which can ensure that you get to enjoy your full smile for many years to come.

#2: Handle Them Carefully & Gently

Your oral health could end up at risk if you somehow damage or compromise your dental restorations. This is because dentures can take several weeks to be fabricated, which can allow any remaining teeth enough time to shift out of place. To avoid any complications or setbacks, try washing them over a water-filled sink. This way they won’t break or shatter if you accidentally drop them. You can also consider transporting them in a protective case or soft towel to keep them cushioned.

#3: Soak Your Dentures Overnight

The last thing you’d want is to be wearing dentures that are covered in grime, debris, and harmful bacteria. On top of brushing and rinsing them often, you’ll want to soak them in a glass of lukewarm water or denture cleaner to keep them germ-free. This is best done overnight, as this will also give your gums time to rest and avoid irritation.

#4: Visit Your Dentist for Routine Dental Checkups

Even if you don’t have any remaining natural pearly whites, you’ll still need to schedule appointments with your dentist every six months for checkups. This will allow them to routinely evaluate your oral health, the condition of your gums and dentures, and address any developing issues they might detect. They can also make any adjustments to your restorations if necessary, that way you can maintain optimal comfort and function.

Sticking to a solid dental care routine is essential for making the most of your dentures. Keep these few tips in mind and visit your dentist regularly, and you should be able to make full use of your new and improved pearly whites for as long as possible!
