Should You Visit an ER for Your Dental Emergency?

When you have an urgent oral issue, you may think it deserves a special response. Fair enough – the saying “drastic times call for drastic measures” exists for a reason. That said, you shouldn’t just visit an ER for a dental emergency. The best fix for your problem is to see your dentist as soon as possible. They’re in a much better position to solve your sudden dilemma. If you’d like to know more, here’s a primer on why to skip the ER and see a dentist for a dental emergency.

What’s Involved in a Dental Emergency?

Just to be clear, a dental emergency is any oral issue needing immediate care. You could suffer one due to an injury, a collision, bad lifestyle choices, etc. Regardless of its exact cause, it requires treatment to avoid severe damage to your oral health. Only then will your mouth be safe and your pain relieved.

As for examples, here are some of the most common dental emergencies:

  • Severe Toothaches
  • Cracked, Broken, or Knocked-Out Teeth
  • Damaged Restorations (i.e., crowns, fillings, etc.)
  • Painful Facial Swelling
  • Bleeding or Aching Gums
  • Soft Tissue Injuries

Should You Visit an ER for It?

ERs excel at treating many conditions, but they don’t handle dental emergencies well. They lack the training and resources to address oral problems fully.

To be specific, an ER can’t treat the source of a dental emergency. Their staff aren’t certified to do such work. At best, they could give you some antibiotics or painkillers. These medicines offer short-term relief, but they won’t treat the underlying issue. For a complete treatment, you must visit a dental practice.

At the same time, an ER charges more than a dental treatment. Spending a lot of cash for temporary help isn’t cost-effective. Doing so stresses your mood and your budget.

Why See an Emergency Dentist Instead?

Instead of an ER, see an emergency dentist for your urgent issue. They’ll get you precisely what you need for your teeth and gums.

Remember, certified dentists are oral health experts. They have years of training and knowledge on dental emergencies and won’t “break the bank” for your care. As a result, they’ll perform a fast and highly effective treatment. Your grin will then heal up in a bit of time.

In the future, don’t visit an ER for a dental emergency. Trust that your local dentist can and will save your smile.
