Should You Attach Your Dentures to Dental Implants?

Traditional dentures offer an affordable way to replace multiple missing teeth or even an entire dental arch. However, as a person’s gums and mouth slowly change over time, dentures can become uncomfortable. In a worst-case scenario, ill-fitting dentures can sometimes slip when eating or speaking. Talk about embarrassing! Thankfully, there is now a more secure way to replace a row of missing teeth: dental implants. With the support of implants, dentures can go from being a nuisance to just like natural teeth! Learn more about how implant dentures in Houston work and their benefits by reading below.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a tiny titanium rod that is surgically inserted into the jaw to create an artificial tooth root. Over the course of several months, the biocompatible implant integrates with the surrounding bone. This natural process is known as “osseointegration”. Once the implant has fully healed, it can provide outstanding support to replacement teeth in the form of a crown, bridge, or denture.

How Do Implant Dentures Work?

If you already wear traditional dentures in Houston, then you know that they stay in place through natural suction or with a little help from dental adhesive. Implant dentures, on the other hand, attach to 4 to 6 strategically placed implants that are anchored to the jawbone. The implants are typically inserted close to the front of the jaw, where the bone is usually thicker. Once the jawbone and implants fuse together, a set of artificial teeth are secured on top.

What Are the Benefits of Implant Dentures?

There are many benefits to attaching dentures to dental implants, including:

  • No Slippage – Because implants fuse directly with the jawbone, implant-supported restorations never slip when eating or speaking.
  • Chewing Power – Dental implants offer nearly the same chewing power as natural teeth, which means you can enjoy all your favorite foods without worry.
  • Visually Appealing – Because they replace teeth from the roots up, dental implants look and feel like natural teeth.
  • Long-Term Solution – With proper care, dental implants can last for decades or even the rest of your life!

Are Implant Dentures Right for Me?

If you are tired of worrying about your replacement teeth slipping when you eat or speak, you are likely a good candidate for implant dentures. In general, candidates for dental implants must have:

  • Healthy teeth and gums
  • Strong, thick jawbone
  • Good oral hygiene habits

If you don’t currently wear dentures, you may still be able to benefit from an implant-supported restoration if you are missing most or all of your teeth.

To figure out the best way to restore your smile, schedule a consultation with your dentist. They will carefully examine your teeth and gums, discuss your unique smile goals, and create a custom treatment plan just for you.
